Description of Elective Experience

Students will shadow veterinary behavioral consultations involving canine, feline, equine and avian patients. Hands-on experience may be provided depending on the qualifications of the student under the direct guidance of the Veterinarian and Registered Veterinary Technician (on a case-by-case basis).  Students will be observing and interacting with 2 Veterinary Technician Specialists in Behavior and RVT's who are Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partners in behavior therapy appointments.

  • Multiple CE Seminars in Behavior Medicine sponsored by: Stautzenberger College, Cuyahoga Community College, MWI, Ceva, Merial, etc
  • Actively pursues veterinary behavior CE through AVMA, OVMA and Cleveland Academy since graducation.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?
  • Hours: M, T, Th, F 8:30am-5:30pm, W 8:30-1pm
  • Shadowing in Consultations of veterinary behavior patients
  • Shadowing in Behavior Therapy Appointments with veterinary behavior patients
  • Assisting in consult room change over / set up for cases and opening/closing of the practice
  • Taking case notes for active discussion after consults
  • 1 Case Report is due by the end of the Elective as part of the Evaluation
  • 2 Handouts (topics chosen by student and Dr. Feltes) are due by the end of the Elective as part of the Evaluation
  • Training time is possible with a dog, cat or horse
  • Students are strongly encouraged to attend puppy socialization classes, our puppy classes and special training activies scheduled during their externship.
