Battenkill Veterinary Bovine PC, NY

Description of Elective Experience

Battenkill Veterinary Bovine is a mixed food animal practice in eastern NY. We are an ambulatory practice and see most of our calls remote from the clinic, travelling in eastern NY, western VT and northwestern MA. The majority of our time is spent on dairies for herd health and consulting. About 20-25% of our time is spent with small ruminant clients and cow-calf beef clients.

Students riding with out practice will be able to build on skills learned in school related to food animal practice, from palpation to surgery to sick animal diagnoses and client interaction. 4th year students, with the oversight of a veterinarian, are encouraged to take the lead on some cases from introduction to history, exam, diagnosis and clinical plan. Students are encouraged to be available for after hours involvement, as this will broaden their exposure to emergency cases such as calvings, prolpases and other cattle and small ruminant emergencies.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Battenkill Veterinary Bovine is a three doctor ambulatory practice with 2 office staff employees. Diagnostic equipment available includes ultrasounds, milk culture lab, blood chemistry, and fecal floatation. We have equipment to consult for milk system analysis, calf audit, and embryo transfer and flushing. We are equipped to hospitalize smaller animals (calves, sheep and goats), although most of the animals seen are on-farm.
