Description of Elective Experience

• Gain real-world experience through exposure to full-service hospitals and techniques under the watchful care of a personal coach doctor. 

• Develop and improve technical skills under the care of a licensed coach as allowed by state regulations. 

• Learn to practice veterinary medicine within a well-equipped hospital. 

• Perfect physical examination skills using Banfield's proprietary computer-guided exam minimum standards. 

• Learn about the business of veterinary practice through exposure to Banfield's marketing and leadership initiatives.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.
  • Doctors are 1:1 or 1:1.5 to Veterinary Assistants.
  • Student will observe and participate in exams, soft tissue surgeries, dentals, taking radiographs, running labwork, administering vaccines, and utilizing microscope to aid in diagnostics.
  • Student will be introduced to the medical records system used for creating treatment plans and charting findings.
  • Student will learn how nutrition plays a role in supportive care. 
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student will work the same shifts as their supervisor which is usually 4 days per week from 8 AM until 6 PM. 

Student will shadow but will also be allowed to perform independent exams of patients prior to the supervising doctor's exam to compare and learn from what the student sees vs what the doctor sees. 

Student will practice restraining pets, drawing samples, and placing catheters in addition to charting and performing exams.
