Description of Elective Experience

Students in the Banfield Externship Program will: 

• Gain real-world experience through exposure to full-service hospitals and techniques under the watchful care of a personal coach 

• Develop medical and surgical skills under the care of a licensed coach as allowed by state regulations. 

• Learn to practice veterinary medicine within a well-equipped hospital. 

• Perfect physical examination skills using Banfield's proprietary computer-guided exam minimum standards. 

• Learn about the business of veterinary practice through exposure to Banfield's marketing and leadership initiatives.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Doctors and extern candidates are supported by veterinary assistants and credentialed veterinarian technicians.

  • In-house laboratory equipment: IdexxCatalyst1; Heska ElementsHT5; Centrifuge, Statspin, Tonopen; Microscope; Refractometer

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student will shadow a veterinarian with their daily caseload mix, assisting where comfortable and will supported by coaching veterinarians team of VAs and CVTs.  

Student will be expected to work hours of their choosing that align with their program.  Typically 8-10 hour shifts that mirror their coaching veterinarian that works Monday thru Saturday.
