Description of Elective Experience

We are a three doctor small animal general practice in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. We offer preventative care for dogs and cats, as well as appointments for illness. We do daily anesthetic dental cleaning with extractions as needed, spay and neuter surgeries.  We occasionally perform other surgeries including mass removals, cystotomies, gastrointestinal foreign body and explores as needed. Students would be involved in all types of appointments and procedures. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have 3 experienced small animal doctors and an experienced support staff including one certified veterinary technician. We have full anesthesia monitoring equipment including electrocardiogram, end tidal CO2, pulse oximetry, blood pressure doppler. We have diagnostic equipment including microscopes, in house complete blood cell count and internal organ function, digital radiographs, and dental radiographs.

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will shadow a doctor each shift and be given opportunities to perform physical exams, scrub into surgeries with doctors and practice clinical skills dependent on their abilities. Students can work up to 40 hours a week or less depending on school requirements. All shifts would be between 7am-6pm weekdays and or weekend shifts may be included. No overnight or on call. A mentor doctor will be assigned to talk about cases and answer questions.
