Description of Elective Experience

Baker House Animal Hospital Provides a veterinary extern a chance to participate in small animal general practice in a suburban practice. Dr. Craig, the owner of the practice, is a 2001 Ohio State Veterinary College graduate. Baker House Animal hospital sees a large number of dogs and cats and a smattering of other. The most common other is currently backyard chickens.

At Baker House, the extern will be able to participate in both surgery and medicine. There is an opportunity  for an extern to actively participate in spays and neuters for a local rescue. Externs will be able to participate in a busy general practice which sees everything from routine wellness to the oddities that first walk in the door. An extern will have the chance to examine the patients, discuss treatment plans with owners, and follow-up on patients. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Baker House is a single doctor private practice with a full time registered technician as well as multiple veterinary assistants. We have ultrasound, digital radiography, a high speed dental unit and a dental x-ray unit. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The weekly schedule is 30-35 hours per week and can include Saturday if a day off is preferred during the week. The student will have access to a veterinarian or a registered technician at all times. The student will have an opportunity to actively participate in the activities of the practice with direct supervision by the liscensed professionals.
