Bailey Veterinary Clinic

Description of Elective Experience

Students practice their knowledge and clinical skills alongside the direction of our doctors. Our externships are available to students currently enrolled in an accredited college of veterinary medicine and provide intensive hands-on emergency, critical care, and GP medicine experience. Students will focus on learning how to effectively communicate with clients, diagnose a variety of conditions, develop treatment plans, and collaborate with support staff in a fast-paced environment.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Bailey Veterinary Clinic has been around for more than 74 years. We are a 13-doctor mixed animal practice comprised of 73 staff members in beautiful Roseburg, Oregon. The ideal community for any outdoor enthusiast, Roseburg is located in Umpqua Valley, Oregon’s best kept secret. It features rolling hills, old-growth forests, deep turquoise rivers, and mountains with unique geological features. It’s also the gateway to one of America’s most stunning destinations: Crater Lake National Park. We are also in the heart of Southern Oregon’s wine country and home to Wildlife Safari, the second largest cheetah breeding facility in the world.

Here at Bailey Veterinary Clinic, our teaching mission goes beyond our own clinic and community. We have the mindset of pursuing the future of the industry and advancing the level of knowledge and care that is available to our patients and our clients. We believe that the greater we are able to support and grow the next generation of veterinarians, the greater their ability to prepare for their career ahead. Veterinary medicine can be tough at times. Having a strong community around you, can make a world of difference.

Our practice routinely sees a wide variety of cases from general preventative care to complex medical and surgical cases. Our facility includes an extensive in-house lab, digital radiography, ultrasound, acupuncture, laser therapy, endoscopy and state of the art dental suite. In addition to furnishing our clinic with updated equipment, we also have the mindset of pursuing the future of the industry. Our focus on Quality Medicine, Good Communication, Client Service, and Education has allowed us to build a great core and clientele that trusts us in providing the medical care we recommend. We also have well-trained support staff who provide great service to our doctors, care to our patients and are excited to welcome a new team member!

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to be in clinic for the hours required by their school (typically 40 hours per week). We offer day shifts and swing shifts to students hoping to get one on one with emergency cases. We are open 7 days per week, so students are able to take weekend or weekday shifts as well. We provide heavy mentorship and expect students to be engaging and ask good questions, but also respectful and know when to hold their questions until after. Students are not expected to provide support, but are welcome to participate in procedures at the discretion of the supervising veterinarian.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info)

A 1BR/1BA "Garden Suite" is provided to the student. This is a building beside the clinic that we turned into an Airbnb specifically for student housing. The housing includes gated access and keyless entry, high speed wireless internet, washer, dryer, heating, air conditioning, television, fully stocked kitchen, fully stocked bathroom, outdoor covered gazebo, parking, and pet friendly.
