Azores Veterinary Practice, CA

Description of Elective Experience

Our practice is located in the North Central Valley of California. We are heavily influenced by dairy medicine. In addition to that, we have developed our own in house IVF laboratory for Bovine, Ovine, Caprine and Equine species. This has allowed us to delve into advanced reproductive procedures. Everything from Laparoscopic Artificial Insemination (LapAI), LapET, LapOPU etc. We are also a well trusted practice for internal medicine of small ruminants and are at times responsible for treating expensive show animals. We experience a large number of porcine, bovine, ovine, and caprine surgeries on a monthly basis. With that, we also have an in-house milk laboratory that runs thousands of samples a week from our clients. This allows students to fine tune their mastitis diagnostic skills and relevant pathogens seen on dairies.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We currently have 6 veterinarians, 3 clinic staff and 1 clinic manager on payroll. Each veterinarian has their own vet truck stocked for on farm services. IMV Easi-Scan ultrasounds, portable radiograph machine, in house hospital pens for both large and small ruminants, in house handling system for both large and small ruminants, full pharmacy. Essentially, we have the capability of performing all services in house or in the field.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student's responsibilities will vary from day to day. On our website we have a pie chart that breaks things down for applicants. A large majority of their time will be spent palpating cows, assisting in the milk laboratory, tending to clinic animals (recipient ewe herd, client animals, hospitalized patients), assisting and participating in hands on surgeries. Not all days are as busy as some so in the student's free time, they will be given a research article in order to present to the team of veterinarians on the students last Monday of the rotation.

The rotation is 5 days a week (Monday to Friday). 8-10 hours a day with some days being longer or weekend work required if emergency cases come in.
