Aviagen Turkeys, Inc., WV

Description of Elective Experience

Externs will be exposed to all aspects of turkey primary breeding. Experiences may include visits to one or both of our hatcheries, turkey rearing farms, turkey egg production farms, and our company laboratory. Daily activities may include observing everything from flock inspections, production visits, communications with R&D team (geneticists), and communication with production team, to vaccination plan development and administration, turkey transport, animal welfare audits, and biosecurity training and assessment.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Aviagen Turkeys, Inc. has a laboratory that performs hundreds of salmonella cultures and thousands of serum ELISA tests weekly.  Our R&D team uses CT machines to evaluate the growth of muscle on turkeys without having to sacrifice them.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Externs should be available to join veterinary staff, other production staff, or R&D staff between the hours of 8am and 5pm.  Occasionally daily start times are prior to 8am to observe activities that happen early in the morning.  Primarily externs will shadow staff veterinarians but may also travel to farms with our service techs.  Depending on the length of an externship opportunities for specific projects may arise. Such projects will be developed specific to each anticipated externship.
