At Apple Tree Animal Clinic, we believe some of the most valuable lessons in veterinary medicine happen outside the classroom, and we love having the opportunity to help students grow into confident, compassionate veterinarians!
We are a privately owned small animal practice in Ranson, West Virginia, offering a welcoming, hands-on externship experience with individualized mentorship directly from our owner and veterinarian, Dr. Nicole Piper. Our goal is for students to become part of our team, not simply stand in the corner and observe!
Students are encouraged to actively participate in appointments, perform physical examinations, develop differential diagnoses and treatment plans, interpret diagnostic results, and assist with surgery, dentistry, and anesthesia as their experience and comfort level allow. We want students to ask questions, think critically, challenge themselves, and feel comfortable learning along the way. We are happy to tailor the experience to each student's interests, skill level, and personal goals.
One of the unique opportunities we offer is an inside look at business ownership and practice management. As an independently owned practice, we believe it is important for future veterinarians to understand not only how to practice good medicine, but also what it takes to build, manage, and sustain a successful veterinary hospital. Students interested in the business side of veterinary medicine are welcome to explore topics such as financial management, pricing and estimates, inventory, staffing, leadership, client relationships, employee management, and the everyday decisions involved in running a practice. We are happy to have open, honest conversations about the challenges, rewards, and realities of practice ownership. Whether students dream of owning their own hospital someday or simply want to better understand how veterinary practices operate, we believe this perspective is incredibly valuable.
Depending on scheduling and availability, students may also have opportunities to participate in livestock medicine, including cattle and goat herd health and reproductive work.
Above all, we strive to create a supportive, approachable learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making decisions under supervision, and building confidence in their abilities. We want our externs to experience the rewarding, challenging, and sometimes unpredictable realities of veterinary medicine while feeling like a valued member of our team.
Our hope is that every student leaves Apple Tree Animal Clinic with stronger clinical skills, a better understanding of the business of veterinary medicine, greater confidence in their abilities, and an even stronger passion for the profession!
Staffing and Mentorship: Our hospital is led by Dr. Piper and supported by a dedicated team of veterinary assistants and client service representatives. We maintain a strong support staff ratio of approximately 2–3 veterinary assistants per veterinarian, along with 2.5 full-time equivalent client service representatives. This staffing structure allows for efficient patient care while providing students with direct access to individualized mentorship, clinical instruction, and hands-on learning opportunities. Students also gain valuable experience working within a team-based environment and understanding the importance of communication and collaboration in veterinary medicine.
Clinical Facilities and Equipment: Our hospital is equipped to provide comprehensive small animal medical and surgical care. Available diagnostic and therapeutic resources include:
Technology and Modern Practice Management: We believe it is important for veterinary students to gain exposure not only to clinical medicine but also to the technology that is shaping the future of veterinary practice. Our hospital utilizes electronic medical records, AI-assisted medical scribes, and automated electronic reminder and communication systems to improve efficiency, maintain medical documentation, and support client relationships. Students have the opportunity to learn how these technologies are incorporated into daily workflows, including reviewing AI-generated documentation for accuracy, maintaining complete medical records, communicating with clients, and understanding how technology can help veterinarians focus more of their attention on patients and their owners.
Clinical Education and Hands-On Experience: We strongly believe students learn best by actively participating in patient care rather than simply observing. Students are encouraged to perform physical examinations, develop differential diagnoses, formulate diagnostic and treatment plans, interpret laboratory and imaging results, and participate in surgical and anesthetic procedures as appropriate to their experience and skill level. We emphasize clinical reasoning, critical thinking, and open discussion, with direct supervision and constructive feedback throughout the rotation. We are happy to tailor the experience to each student's educational goals, whether they are particularly interested in surgery, internal medicine, diagnostics, client communication, or general practice.
Practice Ownership and Business Management: One of the unique aspects of our externship program is the opportunity to learn directly from a veterinarian who owns and manages her own practice. Students interested in business ownership, leadership, or hospital management are encouraged to explore the behind-the-scenes operations of veterinary medicine. Educational opportunities may include discussions about financial management, pricing strategies, inventory management, staffing, employee leadership, client relationships, practice growth, and the challenges and rewards of independent practice ownership. Students can also gain perspective on how technology, workflow design, and appropriate delegation of responsibilities contribute to hospital efficiency and financial sustainability. We believe understanding the business of veterinary medicine is valuable for every future veterinarian, regardless of their intended career path.
At Apple Tree Animal Clinic, our goal is to provide students with an engaging, hands-on clinical experience where they feel like an active member of our veterinary team rather than simply an observer. We believe students learn best by doing, asking questions, thinking critically, and becoming involved in the everyday practice of veterinary medicine.
Schedule and Attendance: Students are generally expected to participate during our regular hospital operating hours, Monday through Friday, with schedules coordinated in advance based on the length of the rotation, the student's educational requirements, and individual learning objectives. We understand that students may have specific scheduling needs and are happy to provide reasonable flexibility when possible. Optional weekend or after-hours opportunities, particularly for livestock-related experiences, may occasionally be available.
Clinical Participation and Responsibilities: We encourage students to take an active role in patient care under direct veterinary supervision. Depending on their education, experience, and comfort level, responsibilities and learning opportunities may include:
Learning Expectations: We do not expect students to arrive knowing everything! We do, however, encourage curiosity, initiative, professionalism, and a willingness to participate. Students should come prepared to ask questions, research unfamiliar conditions, discuss their clinical reasoning, and accept constructive feedback. We strive to create an environment where students feel comfortable saying, "I don't know," because we believe those moments often lead to some of the best learning opportunities.
Practice Management and Professional Development: Students interested in practice ownership or leadership are encouraged to participate in discussions surrounding hospital operations, financial management, staffing, client communication, pricing, and the business side of veterinary medicine. We also provide exposure to modern practice technology, including electronic medical records, AI-assisted medical documentation, and automated client communication systems.
Teamwork and Professionalism: Students are expected to arrive on time, communicate respectfully with clients and staff, maintain patient confidentiality, follow hospital safety protocols, and contribute positively to our team. While we encourage students to participate in patient care and support our staff when appropriate, our externship is designed to be an educational experience rather than a source of additional labor.
Individualized Experience: We recognize that every student enters an externship with different interests, strengths, and goals. We encourage students to communicate what they hope to gain from their time with us, whether that involves developing confidence in appointments, improving surgical skills, exploring diagnostic medicine, learning about business ownership, or gaining a better understanding of life in private practice. Whenever possible, we will tailor their experience to help them achieve those goals.
Above all, we want students to feel welcomed, supported, and challenged in a positive way. We hope they leave Apple Tree Animal Clinic with greater clinical confidence, practical skills, and a realistic understanding of what it means to be a practicing veterinarian.
