Appalachian Veterinary Services, VA

Description of Elective Experience

At Appalachian Veterinary Services, students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic, mixed-animal practice. Our clinical rotation aims to provide students with a well-rounded understanding of veterinary medicine in both companion and large animal settings.

Students who participate in our clinical program can expect to be exposed to diverse clinical cases where students will work alongside our experienced team of veterinarians to create treatment plans for a variety of cases including routine wellness exams, emergency care, surgical procedures and herd health management. Under the supervision of our veterinary team, students will participate in clinical procedures such as diagnostics, imaging, and treatment plans which will allow them to build on their technical skills and clinic decision-making expertise. Our team is dedicated to offering students the opportunities to ask questions, discuss cases and receive constructive feedback all while enhancing their clinical skills.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Veterinary students completing a clinical rotation with our clinic can be expected to actively participate in the daily operations of a mixed-animal practice. This type of experience is designed to enhance clinical skills, build confidence, and provide exposure to a wide variety of cases.

Scheduling: Students can expect to be at our clinic Monday through Friday from 8AM to 5PM. They will also be expected to follow one of our veterinarians on-call schedule which will require them to go to emergencies after hours (5PM to 7AM the following morning).

Typical Day: Students will rotate through our veterinary team while they are with us which will allow them to see a variety of cases along with being able to see how each veterinarian approaches specific cases. Each day they will be paired with a veterinarian and their assistant. Students should be comfortable with being away from the clinic for the majority of the day while providing mobile care to our large animal clients. They will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty of water to stay hydrated as we are unable to promise that the students will be back at the clinic for lunch.
