APAWS Veterinary Hospital, MI

​​APAWS Veterinary Hospital is a unique mixture of full service general practice and shelter medicine that services cats and dogs. As a non-profit we provide veterinary care and short-term housing to unowned animals from various sources such as animal shelter agencies, animal rescue organizations and municipalities. We assist local police departments by providing protective and safe holding for animals involved in animal neglect and cruelty cases. Additionally, as part of our mission, we provide low-cost veterinary services to the general public to keep our local animal community healthy and safe.

We aim for affordable veterinary care while maintaining high quality medicine by providing more than the standard of care. We have all the equipment to support a full service hospital including: digital and dental radiographs, in-house IDEXX analyzer equipment, ultrasound, cold-laser, and more. We have opportunities for mentorship, ultrasound training, and want to help you grow in your career. We use Cornerstone software and a transcribing service to help with medical records.

• We have 2 doctors, one being full time and we have 6 support staff.

• Students will start by shadowing and assisting during appointments and surgery. As students become more comfortable there will be opportunities to lead a case themselves
• Students will assist in surgery with the opportunity to become more involved as their skills grow. The goal would be for a student to perform a dog and/or cat spay and/or neuter unassisted but supervised by the end of their time if they feel comfortable and deemed appropriate by lead veterinarian
• Student will be responsible for charting medical records and communicating medication needs with clients
• Students will participate in daily case discussions
• Students will develop diagnostic plans and discuss plan with mentor
• Student will be expected to perform physical exams
• Student will be able to practice any technical skills they wish to work on such as blood draws, IVC placement, intubation, etc.
• Students will be offered up to 40 hours/week scheduling typically Tuesday through Saturday, but actual schedule and hours can be discussed prior to start 
• Students will have supervision by a veterinarian or support staff at all times
• Students will be able to practice diagnostic skills such as: radiograph interpretation, basic ultrasound techniques, bloodwork interpretation, etc.

• $500/week stipend for gas or groceries
• Pets allowed (2 maximum and friendly with proof of vaccination)
