Duties for DVM students from AVMA-accredited veterinary colleges include:
• Mentored surgical and medical case responsibility, including patient examination, assessment, formulation of a diagnostic and treatment plan, and administration of treatments.
• Spay/neuter surgeries, assistance with dental or soft tissue surgeries, and assistance with anesthesia.
• Assistance with vaccine clinics and other procedures/events depending on availability.
The Animal Protective Association of Missouri (APA) is committed to providing third or fourth year DVM students with the opportunity for an elective shelter medicine rotation (unpaid). The APA is an innovative and progressive leader in animal welfare, dedicated to bringing people and pets together, advancing humane education, and creating programs beneficial to the human-animal bond. With a history of over 100 years in the St. Louis region, the APA helps an average of 5,000 pets find safe loving homes each year. Thousands more are helped through wellness and outreach programs that keep pets healthy and with the people who love them.
Externship opportunities include:
• Annual intake ranging from 4,500 to 6,000 animals on an open-admission policy, affording students experience with a large variety of medical and surgical patients.
• Wellness clinic providing care to ~5,000 owned pets annually.
• Community wellness initiatives such as vaccine and microchip clinics to keep people and pets together.
• Team of experienced veterinary staff for mentorship.
• High-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) surgeries, with hands-on surgical mentoring opportunities available to students in their clinical training.
• Observation of other surgical and dental procedures.
• Experience in infectious disease patient and shelter management.
Proposed schedule:
• Monday-Friday, ~9:00am-5:00pm
• 2 surgery days, 2 shelter medicine days, and 1 wellness clinic day per week (pending interest and case availability)
