Animal Medical Centre of Medina, OH

Description of Elective Experience

At Animal Medical Centre of Medina students will be able to observe and work on dogs, cats and small pocket pets. Based on the students needs and goals, observation and assistance  in surgery and exam room and medicine case work up can be offered. At our clinic, we have digital full body and dental radiology, ultrasound, high speed dental unit, regenerative medicine with platelet rich plasma and stem cell therapies, microscope for in-house cytology, and access to lab diagnostics through Idexx laboratories. Students can put to practice what they’ve been learning and have the ability to do examinations on patients and discuss preventative medicine with clients. Assisting in surgery and working on suturing techniques is available. Students can also practice blood draws and other technical skills  drug calculations and talking through treatment plans for patients.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our clinic has access to VIN as well as a library of textbooks. Our clinic has 3 RVTs and 8 animal aids. We have four exam rooms, a dental suite, a surgery suite, and an X-ray room. Our clinic offers boarding and therefore has two dog kennels and one cat room. We perform multiple surgeries beyond routine spay, neuter, and tumor removal, based on case-specific needs: enucleation, intestinal/liver biopsies, splenectomy, cystotomy, gallbladder removal, and orthopedic surgeries, including medial patella correction, lateral suture stabilization, and joint injections with regenerative medicine. Abdominal ultrasounds performed by our veterinary team are also common. At times, we will also work with a board-certified cardiologist who will come to the practice to perform procedures on our patients. Low-level hospitalization for fluids will also occur. As mentioned previously, we have digital X-ray, ultrasound, and other diagnostic tools, Tonopen and other eye exam tests, IV pumps,  regenerative medicine tools,  in-house lab machines, microscope, glucometer, ketone analyzer, Doppler blood pressure, EKG, Cardell HR, RR, EKG, oxygen, CO2, and blood pressure anesthetic monitors.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will be part of the care team and  shadow the doctors through the day. As the student becomes more comfortable, the student can start with an exam and discuss findings prior to the doctors. Students can also have someone one-on-one client time to discuss heartworm medication or vaccine protocols and other preventative medicine needs. Students can also work on different skills in surgery along with the guidance of the surgeon. The student will never be alone or without support. Schedule is flexible but must occur within our open clinic hours Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 5 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 2 PM.
