Our nine-doctor small animal practice has been a fixture in this community for nearly 50 years and is very collaborative. This elective will offer veterinary students a comprehensive exposure to primary care preventative care medicine, workups for acute and chronic illness, dentistry, and soft tissue surgery as well as acupuncture and TCVM.
The veterinary extern will take an active role in case management with the attending veterinarian, further improving their physical exam skills and formulating diagnostic and treatment plans as well as scrubbing in beside the attending veterinarian for procedures. The goal of the externship is to allow the extern to become confident in their skills prior to going out into practice.
We are fully equipped with up to date diagnostic tools including in house lab machines, digital x-rays as well as digital dental x-rays, ultrasound, and laser.
We are fully staffed with a call center and front desk CSR team and 2-3 techs/assistants per DVM
The student will work the attending DVMs schedule (32-36 hours/week). These are typically set schedules that can be individually addressed at time of externship. Current example would be Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8 am to 5:30 p and every other weekend (half days).
Students, alongside the attending DVM, will go into consult rooms and review PE skills, discuss abnormal findings and next steps in dx/tx, be able to provide assessment lists and ddx list, review drug dosages for outpatient and inpatient/anesthesia cases, review proper aseptic technique, know common preventatives and vaccine schedule, review clinical pathology interpretation, and have first hand experience with therapeutic laser and TCVM/acupuncture.
