Description of Elective Experience

The Animal Eye Institute provides a two or three week rotation of veterinary ophthalmology. Extern will be present for all surgeries and clinical appointments throughout the day. Extern will have exposure to schirmer tear testing, tonometry, fluorescein staining, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Extern will be exposed to various diseases and their respective treatment and prognosis. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have two board certified ophthalmologists on staff, two residents, and an array of ophthalmology technicians and assistants. Extern will have access to literature and equipment used for clinical exams. Extern will be present for all surgical procedures.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Extern will fulfill a two or three week veterinary ophthalmology rotation. Extern will be present Mondays through Fridays for about ten hours each day. Extern will shadow for surgical procedures and examinations, but will also be able to perform ophthalmology tests and get time using direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy.
