Description of Elective Experience

Externship with a private practice veterinary ophthalmology service

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.
  • four veterinary ophthalmologists across three clinics (Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Yorktown)
  • one veterinarian with practice limited to diseases of the eye
  • one specialty intern veterinarian
  • numerous support staff, including multiple veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians
  • slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect fundoscopy, applanation and rebound tonometers, operating microscope and phacomulsification, ocular ultrasonography, and electroretinography (ERG)
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?
  • primary goal is for the extern to practice veterinary ophthalmic examination and diagnostic skills
  • appointment receiving and/or surgeries, Monday through Friday, approx 9am to 6pm
  • appointment receiving Saturday approximately 9am to 12 noon
  • extern has no primary on-call responsibilities, but may participate in emergency rounds
  • time permitting, topic rounds
