Animal Emergency Center, MI

Description of Elective Experience

Our externs get to follow our experienced emergency doctors into exam rooms. They perform physical examinations, learn how to obtain more in-depth histories from clients, help make diagnostic recommendations, learn how to interpret the diagnostics so that treatment plans can be made. They also assist with all procedures and surgeries.  This is a very hands-on externship.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We are a fully staffed 24 hours emergency and critical care facility. We can run all inhouse bloodwork, can send radiographs out for interruption (if necessary), have an inhouse cytology machine, two ultrasounds, a CT and perform all soft tissue surgeries. We have 11 doctors on staff.  We also have cardiologists and ophthalmologists that we work with.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

We ask students to work 7 am to 5 pm or 3 pm to 12 am four days a week.  Weekend shifts are required. They will be working with one to three doctors at a time.
