Description of Elective Experience

Students will shadow at a full-time, small-animal, dermatology clinic in Indianapolis, with Dr. Curtis Plowgian, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist. Typical cases seen include allergies, bacterial and yeast pyoderma and otitis, endocrinopathies, and immune-mediated diseases such as pemphigus foliaceus, sebaceous adenitis, etc. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

There is a full-time dermatologist, a full-time resident, and 4 full-time staff and 1 part-time staff (office manager included). There are several textbooks available in the doctor's office. Our clinic uses video otoscopy, cryoablation, CO2 surgical laser, Phovia, as well as manual otoscopes and basic supplies for cytology, skin scrapes, bacterial and fungal cultures, etc. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Our clinic is open from Tuesday-Friday, 9am to 6pm, with an hour break for lunch. Students should arrive at 8:45am to be a part of morning huddles with the staff to prepare for the day's cases. Students can either shadow the dermatologist or the dermatology resident depending on availability and case selection. There will be some guided quizzing to review basic concepts in dermatology such as cytology collection and interpretation, allergy diagnosis and management, parasite diagnosis and management, and infection control (and many other subjects).
