Description of Elective Experience

This elective will focus on small animal health as it pertains to a shelter situation, the public sector, as well as rescue organizations that obtain animals for large breeding facilities.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Fully staffed shelter/kennel staff, fully staffed, full-service veterinary clinic with digital radiographs, in-house laboratory/bloodwork and urinalysis, microscope, dental high-speed drill, and dental radiology

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student will be expected to take an active role with the husbandry and medical care of hospitalized and shelter animals, performing intake examinations, diagnostics, and surgical procedures on shelter/rescue animals and providing full-service veterinary care (obtaining histories, performing examinations and diagnostics, and helping create treatment plans) for public/owned animals
