Ancare Veterinary Hospital is seeking 3rd and fourth year students looking for an in-depth practice experience. Ancare Veterinary Hospital has developed a 2 and 4 week curriculum to help jump start experience in small animal practice. The program was developed by Chief of Staff and owner, Dr. Steve Dullard, a diplomate in Canine and Feline Practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and Past President of the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the Illinois Veterinary Medical Association. He is a member of Veterinary Management Group 12. Dr. Dullard has spoken extensively on feline surgery, laser surgery, endoscopic ear surgery, brachycephalic surgical treatment, practice management and student mentoring. He has authored two chapters in “Secrets of Feline Medicine”. Dr. Dullard was the 2017 ISVMA President’s Award Recipient

7 certified veterinary technicians on staff, 4 doctor practice, full in-house laboratory, ultrasound, digital radiography including dental, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, flexible and rigid endoscopy, advanced feline medicine, CT Scan, physical therapy, exotic medicine and internal medicine. We have an arrangement with the local humane society so students have ample opportunity to delop spay and neuter technique. Training includes discussions on varied case load, assignments on surgery development, work on technical skills, soft skills, goal setting and understanding a profit/ loss sheet. The hospital has a grieving room so dealing with end-of-life issues will also be addressed.
Student is expected to attend at least 40 hours per week. The hospital is open 7 days a week so more hours are encouraged to maximize experience and contact hours. Some small assignments will be given to enhance learning and understanding on skill development. Students will work closely with technicians on technical skill development. Students will scrub in with doctor on surgeries and perform spay and neuters. Students will accompany doctor for all examinations if free. Development of basic abdominal ultrasound techniques including Tfast, Afast and Global fast methods is covered. Any areas that the student would like to explore is encouraged. A two week minimum committment is required but 4 weeks is encouraged if possible. The program is fast paced and will expose students to all aspects of private practice.
