Description of Elective Experience

Our busy, progressive small animal hospital offers a wealth of hands on experience.  We have four doctors, two of whom have advanced training, and decades of experience among us.  We offer diagnostic ultrasound, echocardiography, surgical, and dental training.   We typically perform surgery and dentistry care daily.   As well, we have a board certified surgeon who regularly practices at our hospital. We have a large caseload and promise experience in a multitude of wellness care and emergent care opportunities. We are open from 8 to 6 pm M-F and 8-12 on Saturdays.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Our goal is to strengthen you in the areas you desire to improve.  We are happy for you to provide actual support (supervised discharge and intake of patients, assisting in surgery, doing simple sonograms with training and oversight support, physical exams, developing care plan with doctors) OR to simply shadow if that is where are you are comfortable.  As enthusiastic OSU grads, we want to give back and help you become as well trained as possible so you can hit the ground with comfort and expertise on graduation day.  Tasks can include:

-Checking in patient, taking history, PE, formulating care plan

-Developing anesthetic plan, monitoring anesthesia

-Scrubbing in and assisting in surgery with licensed DVM immediately supervising

-Observing and practicing sonograms/echocardiograms

-Consultation on radiographs, bloodwork, case discussions
