Description of Elective Experience

Allen Equine Veterinary Services is a two-doctor equine ambulatory general practice with focus on equine performance (lameness exams, chiropractic, acupuncture, dentistry). We do see some daytime emergencies as well. Student will participate in vaccine appointments, perform physical exams, draw blood, view lameness exams, assist in scrubbing for joint injections, assist with dental exams and floats, and anything else that occurs during the day. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Two doctors, each with a veterinary assistant daily, and two care coordinators in the office. DR and ultrasound on both trucks, gastroscopy, Pulsevet shockwave, Powerfloat & Terafloat dental units, Alpha2 & ProStride systems.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?
  • Arrive between 8:00-8: 15 AM each day and expect to finish between 5-6pm (occasionally later) Monday through Friday. Students are not expected to be available for after-hours emergencies.
  • Primarily shadowing our veterinarians with supervised hands-on experience when possible.
