Alaska PAWS (Anchorage, AK)

Description of Elective Experience

Alaska PAWS (formerly Alaska SPCA) runs a non-profit veterinary clinic and adoption center facility headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska. The primary clinic focus is low-cost, high-volume spay and neuter services, but we also offer wellness and sick-pet exams, soft-tissue and orthopedic surgeries, and dental cleanings and extractions. In addition, we run outreach clinics for local unhoused persons and their pets and remote spay/neuter clinics in underserved and non-served communities throughout Alaska.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Alaska PAWS has 4 staff veterinarians and a supporting staff of technicians and technician assistants, as well as administrative staff, customer service representatives, and Adoption Center staff. The clinic has two surgical suites and a dental station, digital x-rays, ultrasound, and uses the ezyVet software program for all medical/clinic record keeping.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The clinic is open 6 days a week, from 8 am to 6 pm. The student is expected to be available at the clinic or adoption center for a total of 40 hours per week.Since we primarily work on client-owned animals, we typically cannot allow the student to take part in the surgeries, but there may be opportunities to do so with adoption center animals that require spay or neutering. Primary student responsibilities include shadowing the doctors in surgery, helping to prep animals for surgery, and providing recovery assistance and observation for animals that have completed surgery. As scheduling allows, the student will also be encouraged to join us on outreach clinics where they may be involved with vaccine administration and/or spay/neuter surgery tech assistance.
