Description of Elective Experience

The primary focus of the elective is exposure to and direct application of skills and knowledge needed in a companion animal veterinary practice.  

  1. The student will shadow the veterinarian in exam rooms and learn how to communicate with clients as well as increase comfort in patient interactions.  
  2. The student will perform nose-to-tail physical exams.
  3. The student and DVM will discuss cases and determine treatment plans together.  
  4. The student will have the opportunity to evaluate lab work, radiographs, and ultrasound.  
  5. The student will discuss different anesthesia plans based on patient signalment and the procedure performed.
  6. The student will have the opportunity to evaluate dental radiographs
  7. The student will learn how to perform various dental extractions.
  8. The student will scrub into surgery with the DVM and assist in surgeries.  
  9. The student will perform surgery or portions of surgery with oversight.
  10. Students will also work with technician staff to increase technical skills , such as  drawing blood  and placing catheters in canine and feline patients

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

4  ten-hour days per week or 5 eight-hour days.  

Monday through Friday only.  The students will not be scheduled as employees, though they are expected to pitch in when needed.  They will shadow the DVM or be shadowed by the DVM.  They will also have the opportunity to work with the technical team.
