AAEP World Equestrian Games 2018 Student Externship, NC

The objectives of this rotation are:

1. To educate the senior veterinary student through exposure to the requisite veterinary care for top athletes in 8 sports: dressage, eventing, show jumping, driving, endurance, reining, vaulting and para equestrian. This will be achieved through assisting the veterinarians at the competition as well as presentations to the students covering the physical demands of each sport, review of the most common injuries, overview of the rules of each discipline of competition, biosecurity and triage of athletic injuries.
2. To provide motivated, talented veterinary students to work as assistants to the veterinarians at the competition. The veterinarians will provide mentorship to the students.
3. To gain clinical experience as part of the veterinary hospital team on site that will provide the medical and surgical needs of the horses at the competition.

Tryon Equestrian Center will be set up with everything imaginable from an on-site hospital, lab site, podiatry center, etc. This FEI sanctioned event will give students an all access look at how the horses are processed on arrival, during their stay for competition, and on departure. Hired and volunteer veterinarians will make up the bulk of the veterinarians in the hospital setting but veterinarians will also be supervising the events and working with selected teams from the variety of countries.

Daily roles for the veterinary students have been developed by the rotation coordinator and chief veterinarian to draft a tentative schedule based on the number of students present on a given day, which ranges from 10 to 31. Primary jobs were those that were necessary to ensure adequate coverage of the veterinary clinic, high health risk venues, and regulatory requirements. These duties include: Chief Veterinarian's Assistant, Clinic Veterinarian's Assistant, Evening Veterinarian's Assistant, Night Veterinarian's Assistant, Piroplasmosis Assistant, CEM Monitor, Eventing Cross Country Finish Box Veterinary Assistant, Driving Marathon Veterinary Assistant, Team Veterinarian Observer, FEI Veterinarian Assistant, Edurance Veterinarian Assistant, Competition Veterinarian Assistant, Ambulance Assistant, Drug Testing Veterinarian Assistant, Sport Horse Farriery, Physical Therapy Assistant, Thermography Assistant, Treatment Steward, Public Relations. Hours will vary depending on assignment, and the students will work all days they are present (with off day rotations mixed in).

Selected students will be staying at Camp Wayfarer, just a short drive from the showgrounds. Costs are covered and ammenities should include room, breakfast, linens, etc. Students dont need to contact anyone, it will be taken care of for their given dates.
